Nestled in the heart of North Africa, Morocco is a land rich in history, culture and artistic expression. Among its most desired treasures are the exquisite Berber carpets, meticulously woven by the Berber women of the region. These rugs are not just decorative pieces, they are vibrant tapestries of life, narrating stories of ancient tribes, traditions and the profound artistry that has been passed down through generations.
The history and origin of Berber carpets goes back thousands of years to the indigenous tribes of North Africa, particularly in the mountainous regions of Morocco. The Berber people, also known as Amazigh, which means free people, have a rich cultural heritage...
Berber carpets, originally made for practical purposes, served as bedding, seating and even clothing for the tribes. These carpets were woven with the wool of sheep that the nomadic tribes herded, making use of the natural resources they had available. The thick pile of traditional Berber carpet provided warmth and comfort, crucial in the harsh and changeable climate of the mountains... the immense Atlas.
The designs and patterns woven into the rugs were not arbitrary. They had deep symbolic meaning, often inspired by personal experiences, beliefs and the natural world around them. These symbols served as a form of communication, transmitting stories, beliefs and traditions from one generation to another. The abstract and geometric patterns that characterize Berber carpets are a language of their own, as each tribe and region developed a unique set of symbols and styles.
Today, Berber carpets are celebrated around the world for their rich history, intricate artistry and unique beauty. They are seen as a bridge between the ancient and the modern, bringing the timeless elegance and cultural richness of the Berber tribes to contemporary homes. Despite its popularity, the authentic craft of Berber carpet weaving continues to be a labor of love, preserving the traditions, stories and art of the Berber people for future generations to admire and appreciate.
Alma Nómada arises from this desire... to bring a little of this cultural richness that the Amazigh people express through tapestry, in a unique process where industrialization has not reached. Each rug has days and months of work by the artisans, and in the endless hours they spend at their looms they share secrets, tell stories and vent, they give their love in each knot... Each of these rugs has a SOUL, because they are the product of a context of work, love and dedication to a heritage that cannot disappear... nomadism, freedom!
